Fellow of Entomological Society of America
Fellow of Royal Society of Entomology London, British
Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
Guy Smagghe is an academician and professor with expertise in entomology. He received his PhD in 1995 at Ghent University in Belgium, and then he was a postdoctoral fellow in Belgium, Switzerland, USA and Spain. Today, he is holding a “High Talents Plan” with GZU.
He is internationally recognized for his innovative research on insects important in agriculture and the training of people from the North and South in different aspects of insect physiology, biotechnology, molecular ecology, and (eco)toxicology with pest and beneficial insects as pollinators and natural enemies. His current interests include interactions between insects, microbes and plants, novel and safe targets for insect pest control, and sustainable IPM systems. Also he has an eye for modern developments as in artificial intelligence (AI).
He is holder of the National Friendship Medal of P.R. China (2019). He is Highly-Cited-Researcher by Web-of-Science/Clarivate and is listed in World’s Top-2% Scientists for whole career by Elsevier/Stanford University. In addition, he has been honored with different scientific awards and 5 doctor honoris causa.
He was coordinator/partner in 10 national projects, including Excellence programs, partner in 5 projects in European Horizon Program, and in 3 European COST Actions. He could support his research with 24 M€ in grants from competitive funding sources
He guided as (co)supervisor 86 successful doctoral students and >150 Master students.
His citation report (20 Oct 2024) shows 751 A1-publications with 47878 citations and an h-index of 95.
